OpenAI Pursues $30 Billion Private Funding Round at $1.25 Trillion Valuation

The AI firm is reportedly seeking new investor capital from Coatue and UAE backers instead of rushing toward a public listing.

OpenAI is currently negotiating to secure a massive influx of private capital, pivoting away from an immediate public market debut to focus on a new fundraising round. The artificial intelligence laboratory is looking to raise up to $30 billion, with investors from Coatue and the United Arab Emirates leading the effort. Sources familiar with the matter indicated that this transaction is being structured as a private placement rather than an initial public offering.

The proposed valuation attached to this round is set at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. This figure would establish a new benchmark for the private sector, potentially making OpenAI the most highly valued private company in history. Terms for the transaction are still under negotiation, and specific details regarding the final structure could shift as discussions progress. OpenAI declined to comment on the ongoing fundraising efforts.

Reports concerning capital injections from the UAE suggest the financial arrangement could be intertwined with a broader partnership regarding infrastructure. There is a possibility that the funding from the region could be linked to a deal providing additional computing capacity for OpenAI. This potential link to hardware resources comes as the organization prepares to scale its operations significantly.

Should this valuation hold, it would significantly exceed the company's previous financial benchmarks. Earlier this year, a funding round in March placed the ChatGPT developer at a post-money valuation of $852 billion. In June, the company submitted confidential paperwork for an IPO, though the current pursuit of private funds indicates a shift in strategy regarding the timeline for going public.

This valuation strategy also has implications for competitors in the AI sector. Anthropic, another major player, is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut. Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May and filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, suggesting that both firms are competing for the title of the highest-valued entrant in the public markets.
